Historical Namesake:
C.C. Gideon was Marilyn’s grandfather who came to the Black Hills in 1918 to supervise the construction of the State Game Lodge. Working alongside Peter Norbeck, he was able to turn vision into reality. The two men laid out both the Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road. With Norbeck’s encouragement, Gideon designed the historic Pigtail bridges on Iron Mountain Road. After serving the public at the Game Lodge for 27 years, Gideon became the first concessionaire at Mt. Rushmore for another 5 years before retiring in 1955.

The lodge was beautiful in a wooded setting. It was perfect for us since we were heading to Mount Rushmore for a graduation.

Absolutely beautiful lodge with amazing surroundings and a perfect long range view of Mt Rushmore. When we booked, Custer State Park wasn't on our itinerary. It was amazing. Marilyn provided some excellent tips on what to see and what to skip if time limited. We enjoyed the home cooked breakfasts, freshly baked evening snacks and available coffee bar. Would stay again anytime.

This place was perfect for our two night stay in the Black Hills area. We are already looking forward to a longer return stay.
Location was outside of town and a short drive to Custer State Park, Mt Rushmore, and other area attractions.
The B & B was charming, comfortable, and full of history of the area. We had a view of Mt Rushmore from the deck !
The real treasure here is the owner, Marilyn, who is a wealth of information regarding the history of the area. She helped us fine tune our itinerary, made excellent restaurant recommendations, and sat down to discuss driving directions. She even sent us off with homemade scones when we had an early morning departure.
Highly recommend !

This family was an amazing host. Everything we needed was there and they were extremely responsive when I asked for things. The breakfast was amazing, and the desserts at night were fun. I had a very good experience staying here and Hailey recommend them.

Great 3 night stay. Perfect location and launch pad for all the sights yet tucked away from the hoards. Marilyn is a charm! Full of local knowledge, tips and tricks. The room was quiet (never heard a peep from other rooms). The deck is lovely. Breakfast is tasty with eggs from her own chickens. Chat with other vacationers or walk in the nearby woods.

We loved staying at Buffalo Rock Lodge. We learned a lot about the history of the area from Marilyn and the warmed baked goods every evening took it over the top. The view of Mt Rushmore was great.

Marilyn and her son, Gideon, made our stay a memorable one. They greeted us upon our arrival and were very friendly and helpful during our stay.

Marilyn’s family has strong ties to the community as a grandfather helped build Mount Rushmore. Take advantage of your stay and visit with this family as they have a lot to say about the area and will give directions to wherever you need/want to go.

The cabin is beautiful inside and out with a beautiful view. The room was clean and comfortable.

We were spoiled with a continental-type breakfast including hard boiled eggs every morning fresh from their chicken coop. We especially enjoyed the late evening snacks with the chocolate chip cookies and lemon meringue pie.

We felt at home and highly recommend the Buffalo Rock Lodge.
